How are campers divided up?

Athletically, campers are split up by age group and skill level. If we have younger campers who show promise or older campers who need more work on basics, we use our discretion and place kids with other campers on their level.

Socially, campers are split up solely based on the following age groups. Grades reflect fall 2022.

Rooming is selected according to age groups, familiarity.

Lower Camp: Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6, Grades 7-8

Upper Camp: Grades 9-10, Grades 11-12

 

What is the ratio of counselors/coaches to campers?

6:1 – We pride ourselves on providing hands-on instruction and personal attention to each and every one of our campers.

What other programs are offered besides basketball?

Simply put, Step It Up is a sleep-away camp for basketball players. Daily electives, evening activities, field trips and Step It Up Talks around out the curriculum. It’s a lot of ball and a lot of fun. Check out our videos to get an inside look at our off the court curriculum.

 

How does Step It Up Basketball Camp ease the transition for first-time campers?

Should parents request it, we reach out to our campers and form a connection the minute they sign up for camp. A phone call and/or a meeting will take place in order to let you and your child know what you can expect at camp, and what our unparalleled curriculum entails. Step It Up is a family and we want your child to feel that right away.

Is there a camp mom?

Yes! Yogev’s mom, Guila is our camp mom. But, at camp, she isn’t just Yogev’s mom, she is everyone’s mom. Guila guides, comforts, and listens to our campers as only a mom can. Night or day, Guila is always on call to soothe or lend a hand whenever and wherever she’s needed.

Is the infirmary staffed?

Our infirmary is staffed with a full-time registered nurse with certifications in CPR and First Aid.

Where is Step It Up located?

Camp Step It Up is located at Hobart College, a 4.5 hour drive from minutes from New York City with plenty of flights available to nearby Rochester.We provide bussing from NYC and Teaneck. Our campus boasts gorgeous facilities that include: 5 indoor courts, 3 outdoor courts, weight room, swimming pool, a lake for stand up paddling/kayaking/swimming, Olympic track, turf field, soccer/football fields, tennis courts, baseball field, plenty of hang out areas and more.

How’s the food at camp?

Your children aren’t going to miss the food at home! Step It Up serves a wide variety of nutritionally balanced meals, with options covering every major food group. Every meal is buffet style and includes but not limited to a choice of protein, carbohydrate, vegetables and a salad bar. Our menu includes Chinese Food, BBQ, Italian, Grilled Chicken with Mash, Mexican Day, Pizza Day, Ice Cream Day and Icees for dessert and a great Shabbat menu.

In addition to our 3 meals, campers also receive a power snack at 4:00 pm to help prepare them for the second part of the basketball day. At Step It Up we take our food very seriously 🙂

What if my child has special dietary needs or food allergies?

We will make sure all precautionary measures will be taken. If your child needs a special diet, our chef will work with your family to design a customized diet for your child. Our menu is fully Kosher (under supervision of Rabbi Chayim Zirkind of Brandeis University, Boston, Massachusetts). We can cater to gluten free campers, vegetarians and our menu is also nut free!

What if my child has special/additional needs?

At Step It Up, we have the utmost respect for the additional needs of our campers, whether they are medical, emotional, or physical.

All necessary measures will be taken to ensure that appropriate arrangements are made to preserve the integrity of your child’s experience.

Are there field trips?

In addition to our intensive training program, we take the time to rejuvenate ourselves and embark on several one-day excursions. These trips include Six Flags Amusement Park, Hurricane Harbour, beach field trips, major league baseball games and more.

How can I contact my camper during his stay at Step It Up?

Feel free to e-mail your camper anytime at mycamper@campstepitup.com with your camper’s name in the Subject Line. Campers will have the opportunity to respond by writing letters or calling (phones are given out on field trip days).  You will also have the emails and phone numbers of our camp directors, camp mom, associate camp directors and on-site secretary.

What is the electronics policy at camp?

Cellphones and laptops are not allowed in camp. We will collect all cell phones, laptops, Ipads, and all wireless enabled devices during check-in and return them on field trip days which take place every 2 weeks. We want our young athletes to be focused and independent, not dependent on technology.

Will my child need spending money at camp?

For your camper’s safety, we do not recommend that you send your son to camp with a wallet full of money. But, we do have Step It Up Bucks. We recommend $50-$100 per week in total. Step It Up Bucks can be used in our Canteen to purchase drinks and snacks for his room, or even deodorant, soap and shampoo if he runs out. We also have a Camp Store which is stocked with Step It Up merchandise including: jerseys, t-shirts, shorts, sweatpants, basketballs, tank tops, slides, bags and more.

Campers can also use this money on field trips.

Over the last 8 years, we’ve hosted campers from 10 countries and 20 states. While most of our campers come from the US and Israel we have also been lucky enough to host campers from…
